Toronto Event: Chiaroscuro Reading Series
Friday, September 9th, 2011One great way to recover from the rigours of the 3-Day Novel Contest is to get a taste of the kind of fiction that can be conceived during the marathon—and one such opportunity is coming up in Toronto.
Our 2009 3DN winner, Mark Sedore, will read from his winning novel this Wednesday, September 14, as part of the fabulous Chiaroscuro Reading Series. This edition of the regular event, called A Chill In the Air, features Mark alongside Helen Marshall and Katherine Govier, who will each present their own dark and deliciously chilly visions of the future.
Details:
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 8pm - 11pm
Augusta House
152 Augusta Avenue, Toronto [map]
It’s a great opportunity to meet with a fellow contest survivor, so come on down!
Snowmen reviewed in The Globe and Mail
Friday, March 11th, 2011Snowmen, our 2010 winning novel by Mark Sedore, has received a glowing review in The Globe and Mail. Brett Alexander Savory says that Sedore “doesn’t waste words, yet brilliantly manages to convey the bitter, antagonistic relationship between brothers Charlie and Larry,” and weaves the elements of the book “easily and with precision.” On crafting such a complicated book in such a short time frame, Savory says:
“A lesser writer would have taken twice these 170 pages to tell the same story with as much resonance. Through his sparse, economical writing and keen ear for believable dialogue, Sedore unerringly pulls the reader in, making us care about the three main players in the book. We care deeply what happens to them all – even Larry, despite his vindictiveness. Or maybe because of it.”

“Seems straightforward, wrapped up like popular fiction. Yet, Sedore’s story takes an unexpected departure from typical style… You only have to read the first three or four chapters to appreciate Sedore’s pared down writing style, which is well matched to [the protagonist's] sharp wit.”—Brooke Ford

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR ENTRANTS!
The judges were pleased and impressed with the quality and originality of the submissions to this pressure-cooker event. Once again we would like to give special mention to Natasha Carr-Harris of Vancouver, our youngest entrant for the second year running and the author of The Story of St. Patrick’s Day. Special mention also to our second-youngest entrants (also in their second year), Abby Adams and Sean Vipond of Cochrane, Ontario, who teamed up to write an untitled collaborative sci-fi/fantasy novel, and to the creative writing students at Pleasant Valley Secondary School in Armstrong, B.C., who holed up at their school during the contest to complete their wonderful novels as a group.
This year’s event drew in a record 650 entrants, of whom 460 managed to complete and submit a novel. Twenty countries were represented in this year’s event, making it the most international 3-Day Novel Contest on record! Every year it is monster task for our judges to pick a few winners from the incredible works submitted to the contest and this round was no exception. We thank everyone who put their heart into this creative experience and allowed us to read the results!
For those who are interested in taking part in the next 3-Day Novel Contest, the 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will take place September 4-6, 2010. Save the date, and ask to be added to our newsletter list so you are notified when registration opens!
