Art of the Outline: Exercise #2

Exercise #2: Getting to the Truth

There are many ways to skin a cat! Discover which layer of truth you are trying to uncover in the process of writing your 3-Day novel. Determine which layer or layers of truth best apply to your story or your experience of writing the story and write down a few ideas  in preparation for September 1st-3rd (register here).

Truth as a stick: There are good guys and bad guys, this truth aims to expose who is right and who is wrong, presenting the proof as if in a court of law.

Truth as confession: The thrill of exposure, this truth can be the need for relief or absolution.

Truth as fact: Less emotional, born of a need to honour and document the past with scrupulous adherence to fact.

Truth as triumph: This story details the authors dauntless overcoming of bullies and detractors, impossible odds or the forces of nature.

Truth as authenticity: This writing harbours a sense that there is a sacred, authentic truth that can be discovered and expressed.

Once you define which truth you’re working with, it can lead you to deeper truths.
